Firmware is low-level software, and input/output instructions are stored in read-only memory (ROM). ROM stays intact even when electrical power is removed. This means that firmware redirection, if supported, can be used with a service processor and EMS to manage the server remotely from the POST process to the operating system components initialization.

In-band management is the administration, either directly via the console or remotely via the network, of a server that is running normally. Out-of-band management is management by using a serial port or special device. Typically, the serial port is used as an out-of-band management port and devices designed for this type of support are attached. A secure connection can then be established, either through a phone line or a serial port connection through a null modem to a device (terminal concentrator or service processor) that allows out-of-band management via the network. Out-of-band management can be used to perform normal administration duties as well as EMS. One goal of using out-of-band access and EMS is to return the server to a functioning state, where in-band connection is then possible.

Out-of-band remote administration is often used to provide an additional layer of security. Because most attacks on the server are attempted via the network connec tion, either from the LAN or through a connection to the Internet, some security experts advise preventing remote administration via the LAN and providing out-of-band capability. A secure, private telephone line can be implemented and used as the administration venue, or a separate administration network can be configured using serial ports and terminal concen trators or service processors. Out-of-band remote administration is not inherently more secure than remote administration over the normal network. Each process has its own risks, and many out-of-band administration services do not provide security at all. You must carefully weigh the risks of both methods and choose the one you can best secure and that fits the rel ative risk and relative sensitivity of the server to be administered.

They might be added by Windows Server 2003 when you install additional com ponents. Optional Windows Server 2003 components might include additional preconfigured MMCs that Windows Server 2003 adds when you install a compo nent. For example, when you install the DNS service, Windows Server 2003 also installs the DNS Management console.

You can use many of the preconfigured MMCs for administrative tasks. However, there will be times when you need to create your own custom MMCs. Although you can t modify preconfigured consoles, you can combine multiple preconfigured snap-ins with third-party snap-ins provided by independent software vendors that perform related tasks to create custom MMCs. You can then do the following:

Save the custom MMCs to use again. Distribute the custom MMCs to other administrators. Use the custom MMCs from any computer to centralize and unify administra tive tasks.

EMS is secured primarily by securing the out-of-band infrastructure. An out-of-band infrastructure is the support system that enables remote troubleshooting and repair of systems that do not complete the operating system boot. There are specific products that can connect via a serial port or other port and provide management options. These include terminal concentrators and service processors.

Creating custom MMCs allows you to meet your administrative requirements by com bining snap-ins that you use to perform common administrative tasks. By creating a custom MMC, you do not have to switch between different programs or different preconfigured MMCs because all of the snap-ins that you need to perform your job are located in the custom MMC. Consoles are saved as files and have an .msc extension. All the settings for the snap-ins contained in the console are saved and restored when the file is opened, even if the console file is opened on a different computer or network.

Every MMC has a console tree, which displays the hierarchical organization of its asso ciated snap-ins. The MMC in Figure 3-2, for example, contains Device Manager on the local computer and the Disk Defragmenter snap-ins.

Terminal concentrators are hardware devices that are used to provide serial access to several servers from a single networked device. This device can then be used to mon itor a large number of servers from one location. Terminal concentrators typically include many serial ports that can be connected to servers over null modem cables, and they in turn can be accessed over the network by using telnet.
