You must determine the number of domains for each forest in your organization. Although one domain might effectively represent the structure of small or mediumsized organizations, larger and more complex organizations might find that one domain is not sufficient. Before adding any domains you should be able to state the purpose of the new domain and justify it in terms of administrative and hardware costs.

Design the SUS baseline configuration. Consider the name resolution service available on the network. If NetBIOS name resolution is available, the NetBIOS name is all that is necessary. If DNS must be used, a DNS name must be entered. Consider which servers will synchronize content download updates from Microsoft and which from another SUS server. Use the Set Options page, as shown in Figure 5-8, to enter proxy settings for SUS servers that must use a proxy server to reach the Internet. Consider lan guages that are required. All language-specific updates are available and will be downloaded and synchronized by default. To improve performance, select only the languages you will need. Take the time, however, to identify which languages are needed so that the appropriate language fix is available. Con sider where content will be stored. In most cases, content will be stored on the SUS server, but you might decide that clients should be instructed to download updates directly from Microsoft. This might be the preferred solu tion for remote clients. In this case, a separate SUS server can be configured. When clients connect to the network, they will be notified that they need to obtain that patch directly from Microsoft.
