Design a site GPO, which points to the local SUS server and contains all other settings, for each location. The Boston and New York GPOs should be configured with NO OVERRIDE so that OU policies cached on visiting user computers will not direct the clients to attempt to use a SUS server across the WAN. For New York and Boston, design an OU GPO that points to their local SUS server for all users. If you do this and users visit a site other than their own, they will receive that site s policy, which will take precedence over their own OU policy; however, if they use a VPN to connect and receive no site policy, they will still have a SUS server to contact for updates. The security administrators are correct that services might be enabled that were disabled in the past to close security vulnerabilities. MBSA does require that scanned systems have File and Print services and Remote Registry services run-ning. Both of these services have been the source of successful attacks on Win-dows computers in the past. They are often on a list of services that security mavens advise administrators to disable. However, the benefits of determining which systems are not being patched might outweigh the risk for many systems. For other critical systems and sensitive systems, these services can be disabled and a manual connection via terminal services can be used to run a local copy of MBSA. Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition, and Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edi tion, provide Replmon.exe: Active Directory Replication Monitor, Repadmin.exe: Replication Diagnostics Tool, and Dsastat.exe for monitoring and troubleshooting replication. To use these tools, you must first install the Windows Support Tools on your computer. The Active Directory Replication Monitor (Replmon) enables administrators to view the low-level status of Active Directory replication, force synchronization between domain controllers, view the topology in a graphical format, and monitor the status and performance of domain controller replication through a graphical interface. The Replication Diagnostics Tool (Repadmin), allows you to view the replication topology as seen from the perspective of each domain controller and the replica tion metadata and up-to-datedness vectors. This tool can be used in troubleshooting to manually create the replication topology (although in normal practice this should not be necessary), and to force replication events between domain controllers. Dsastat.exe compares and detects differences between directory partitions on domain controllers and can be used to ensure that domain controllers are up-todate with one another. The tool retrieves capacity statistics such as megabytes per server, objects per server, and megabytes per object class, and compares the attributes of replicated objects.
